Project's Summary:

One of this project goals consists in continuing and deepening the analysis of the relation between the perceptions of justice of the parents’ and teachers’ behaviour and the citizenship and deviant behaviour in adolescents, namely the mediator and/or moderator effect of psychosocial variables in this relation.

The evaluation of citizenship at school will focus on two major domains: the rights of opinion and duties (cooperation and solidarity; the assumption of responsibility in school tasks) and it will be undertaken based on the instrument built in the previous project (The relation between perception of justice behaviour, deviant behaviour and citizenship, Gouveia-Pereira & Carita, 2003-2005).

The evaluation of the deviant behaviour will focus, in the general social context, on several domains, namely vandalism, additive substances and alcohol, school norms, theft, physical and verbal aggressions and disobedience. This evaluation will be undertaken based on the instrument built in the previous project (The relation between perception of justice behaviour, deviant behaviour and citizenship, Gouveia-Pereira & Carita, 2003-2005).

Perceptions of justice concerning school and family’ authority figures and the way they are treated by the latest have an impact on the adolescent's behaviour regarding institutions and its authority (Emler & Reicher, 1995, Gouveia-Pereira, 2004), namely rules acceptance, cooperation and solidarity behaviours in the groups to which they belong (Tyler, Degoey & Smith, 1996; Tyler & Smith, 2000), and 2) the construction of their personal and social identity.

Project’s aims:

To analyse the effect of mediator/moderator variables, such as the legitimacy of authority, reputation, identification with the group peers (formal and informal), in the relationships between perceptions of justice of school and parental authorities and the exercise of citizenship and deviant behaviour in adolescents.
